Sheffield Set to Bid For 100 More New Council Homes12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 22nd Oct 2009
Sheffield could be in line for another 100 new council homes thanks to the Liberal Democrat run Council. Lib Dems are due to approve plans to bid for the homes at next week's Cabinet meeting. The Lib Dem Council have already secured funding for 27 new council homes. If the latest bid was also accepted up to a total of 127 council homes could be built in Sheffield. During Labour's time in control of the Council not one single extra council homes was built. At their cabinet meeting on 28 October, Lib Dem Councillors will decide whether to bid for further funding which, if successful, would see around 100 new properties built on sites at Burngreave, Parson Cross, Beighton and Mosborough by March 2012. This would bring about £10 million of investment into the city. Councillor Bob McCann, Lib Dem Cabinet Member for Housing and Sustainable Safer Communities, said: "Providing more affordable homes in Sheffield is at the heart of the Council's plans as we know how much local people need them. These houses would be built to some of the highest green standards in the country, meaning lower fuel bills for tenants. "The sites we have in mind for these homes have been identified for some time and providing housing here will increase the range of homes available for local people and go towards building strong, vibrant communities."
