Liberal Democrat Sheffield City Council have allocated £200,000 for Sheffield's biggest-ever street sign maintenance programme. Street signs in Sheffield will be given a thorough overhaul over the next few months to improve the general appearance of the city and to make it easier to get around the road network.

Councillor Sylvia Dunkley, the Council's Cabinet member for Culture, Leisure and Streetscene commented: "We have listened to comments from local residents and businesses, who have told us that the state of our street signs is letting the city down, so we intend to deal with this issue. We have allocated the money to get the work carried out over the next few months, but we need everyone's help to identify any 'rogue' signs that need our attention.

"We are keen to conserve the distinctive parts of the city's streetscene, such as the old black and white finger signposts. The additional funding will also be used to repair the damaged finger posts that are an important part of the city's heritage."

Council officers have already started mapping out the signs that need replacing, but local residents are also being invited to report their concerns about particular signs - or lack of them by either visiting www.sheffield.gov.uk/betterroadsigns or by phoning the hotline on 0114 273 4567.
