The Liberal Democrat Group on Sheffield City Council

Lib Dems backing Economic Masterplan

The Liberal Democrat Group on Sheffield City Council have thrown their weight behind Sheffield's recently launched Economic Masterplan. Lib Dems believe that the plan can be the 'building block' on which the future success of Sheffield's economy should be based upon.

Local Liberal Democrats are supporting the ambitious plan which aims to attract jobs and increase the average wage in Sheffield. Lib Dems believe that there is significant scope for improvement and that the City can begin to catch up to their local rivals using this new plan.

The masterplan unveiled last week includes the establishment of a new business district in the Moor area of the city centre. Lib Dems have admitted that they are not yet 'sold' on the idea. They believe that there could be a possible tension between a new high quality business district and the existing discount stores and the new markets.

Cllr David Baker, Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group and Shadow Cabinet member for Economic Development, Planning and Culture, said: -

"Improving the local economy is absolutely vital if Sheffield is going to move forward in the next decade and beyond. Therefore we are extremely pleased to support the exciting Economic Masterplan that was unveiled last week."

"We are pleased that the masterplan is focused on the tangible benefits an improved economy can bring. More and better quality jobs, an improved average pay and a more attractive and vibrant city are just some of the things that we can achieve if we are successful."

"There are one or two things that we are not completely sold on yet. For example, we are yet to be convinced that the Moor would be the best place for a new business district. The discount stores currently on the Moor have a place within the city centre offer. With the new markets set to open at that location too, will the Moor be the best place for new quality offices?"

"Of course at this stage the masterplan is just that, a plan. But we are committed to work together in order to ensure that the masterplan is successful and that everyone in Sheffield benefits from the results."
