Local Walkley Lib Dem in streetlight plea12.00.00am UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 24th Sep 2007
A local Liberal Democrat Councillor for Walkley has hit out at the Sheffield City Council's failure to repair local streetlights that haven't been working for a shocking total of seven months. Cllr Diane Leek has been battling with council officials to get streetlights repaired on Hawksworth Road in Walkley since they all went out in February. Despite supposedly being fixed twice, the lights only last hours before they where out again. Cllr Leek is demanding that the lights on Hawksworth Road and the surrounding area are fixed properly. She believes that leaving the area without lighting during the dark winter nights could have safety implications for local residents. Cllr Diane Leek, Liberal Democrat member for Walkley, said: - "With the dark winter nights fast approaching its essential that the council gets its finger out and fixes these lights once and for all. The path is steep and uneven so it's difficult to walk on during the day, never mind in the pitch black whilst having to dodge wheelie bins!" "People also don't feel safe going outside when none of the lights are working. The statistics show that unlit areas experience a greater amount of night time crime, therefore its unacceptable that the council will still not fix the streetlights." "I have been pleading with council officers to sort things out for months, but the problem persists and residents are rightly feeling fed up. People in the local area don't want any more excuses they just want their street to be properly lit, that shouldn't be too much to ask."
