Annual targets needed if we are to combat climate change10.14.55am UTC (GMT +0000) Fri 16th Mar 2007
Liberal Democrats are calling for Sheffield to put targets in place to save the environment over the next few years. The council must set firm goals for tacking climate change through reductions in carbon emissions. At the moment the council doesn't have any serious climate change targets under Labour. The Government is aiming to cut Britain's carbon dioxide emissions by 60 per cent by the year 2050. But Lib Dems nationally want to force the Government to have annual targets - and locally Lib Dems believe Sheffield must start setting its own targets. Cllr Paul Scriven, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, said: - "We are not sure the Government's targets will go far enough.I am very worried that Sheffield Council still refuses to set annual targets which means the city won't be playing its full role in these important reductions" "Until the council sets targets so that individuals, businesses and the public sector know exactly what they have to do then Sheffield really has not signed up fully to dealing with one of the most important issues facing the world"
