Labours 100% record on ASBOs in Sheffield12.56.51pm UTC (GMT +0000) Mon 9th Oct 2006
Labours shocking record of tackling anti-social behaviour in Sheffield has been exposed. Lib Dems have uncovered figures that show 100% of ASBOs issued last year were breached. Figures obtained through the Freedom of Information Act reveal that in 2003 45% of ASBOs issued by Sheffield City Council were breached, rising to 81% in 2004 and 100% last year. One individual breached an order 24 times and another 16 times. Also Home Office Statistics also show that 23% of people living in South Yorkshire with perceived high levels of anti-social behaviour, the figure is twice as high as anywhere else in Yorkshire. Lib Dems believe that the failure is down to Labour bosses within the Town Hall promoting a 'media driven' policy, jumping from headline grabbing initiative to initiative without taking real action on the front line. Lib Dems are now calling on the Labour controlled Council to re-assess their anti-social behaviour policies in order to concentrate on catching offenders rather than chasing headlines. Councillor Paul Scriven, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Sheffield City Council, said: - "Labours shocking record of 100% failure on anti-social behavior shows that their media driven policies are not working. We need effective measures to tackle offenders in our communities, this isn't happening under Labour" "Instead of jumping from headline grabbing initiative to initiative the council should be focusing on measures of substance. It's all very well handing out lots of ASBOs, but if the resources are not there to enforce them properly then they won't work" "Labour promised to make things better, but anti-social behaviour, crime and the fear of crime is getting worse in Sheffield. They are they breaking a key election commitment. But they are also failing the honest hard working people throughout Sheffield who want to live in safety and not have their lives blighted by a minority of troublemakers"
