The Liberal Democrat group on Sheffield City Council have welcomed the news that the council plan to bid for £300m of road repairs through a highways PFI. Today the Councils Cabinet has approved the decision to put forward an expression of interest for the scheme. Lib Dems have broadly welcomed the move and are calling for the council to ensure a number of key conditions are met by the bid.

Councillor David Baker, Deputy Leader of the Sheffield Liberal Democrat Group, said: -

"Sheffield's roads are a major cause for concern for local people, therefore I welcome the expression of interest that will be put forward to Government for a highways PFI scheme"

"The council now faces the task of putting together a business case and there are a number of key issues that need looking at such as affordability and the level and scope of work proposed"

"In order to assess if this is a good deal for Sheffield we need to see exactly how the PFI scheme would affect services currently being delivered. There are still a lot of unanswered questions, but we are hopeful that a successful scheme can be achieved"
