The Liberal Democrats are urging football fans in Sheffield to recycle all their empty bottles and cans during the World Cup this year. Cllr Simon Clement-Jones, Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet member for a Sustainable Environment, has asked Sheffield to "Recycle for England!".

During the World Cup it is estimated that around 340 million drinks cans and bottles will be consumed be people whilst watching the World Cup in Germany this summer.

Lib Dems believe that the World Cup can be used as a focal point to promote recycling given the extra waste generated during the tournament. Supporters can support their team and then support Sheffield's recycling efforts by recycling all their extra waste.

Councillor Simon Clement-Jones, Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet member a Sustainable Environment, said: -

"Thousands upon thousands of extra cans and bottles will be consumed in Sheffield during the World Cup this summer. It's a great time to get switched on to recycling with all the extra waste produced, so the message is - recycle for England!"

"Whilst everyone will be cheering on Beckham and the team over the coming weeks, they can also make recycling their goal this summer. If all goes well in Germany not only will the England team bring back the World Cup, Sheffield will be celebrating a higher recycling rate which will help us all live in a greener more sustainable city"
