Local Councillors

Fulwood has three Lib Dem councillors. Learn more about them below:

Name: Cllr John Knight

Years as councillor: 15                     Term Ends: May 2012

Bio: John Knight has been a councillor for his local area for fifteen years, having first been elected for Fulwood in 1996. His background is a careers advisor, having seen a generation of young people on the dole queue. The same inspiration led John to get involved with local politics. As a local councillor, he has also fought for more facilities for older people and measures improve local traffic hotspots. He is also ingrained into the local community, a keen member of Hallam Community Association, organising walks for the associations. This year, John sadly announced that he would not be standing again for election and will therefore retire as a councillor in May 2012.

From 1999-2002, he was the Council’s Cabinet Member for performance, helping to clear up the mess of the previous Labour administration. From 2008-10, he was Cabinet Member for Children’s services and oversaw record improvements in the city’s GCSE and KS2 results. He has also been Cabinet Member for the Environment and now serves as Chair of the South West Community Assembly.
