Broomhill has two Lib Dem councillors. Learn more about them below:

Name: Cllr Shaffaq Mohammed

Years as councillor: 7                     Term Ends: May 2014

Bio: Shaffaq has been a councillor for Broomhill since 2004. He was raised in Tinsley, his father a steel-worker, and is an avid Wednesday fan. After being one of the Co-op’s youngest managers, he studied A-levels at Sheffield College then business studies at Sheffield University. He is a qualified youth worker, a magistrate and an active member of the local community, involved with charity work within the city as well as abroad. Locally, he has been a member of the Broomhill Festival committee and has worked hard to strike the balance between student and permanent residents. As a Cabinet Member, Shaffaq was responsible for improving the city’s parks, doubling the number of ‘green flag’ awards in Sheffield. In 2011, he was elected Leader of the Sheffield Lib Dem Group.

Name: Cllr Paul Scriven

Years as councillor: 11                     Term Ends: May 2012

Bio: Paul was born in Huddersfield and left school at 16 with no qualifications. He returned to college at 18 and then took a degree at Manchester. Paul then worked for the NHS, before setting up his own business in Sheffield. He was first elected for Broomhill ward in 2000 and became a popular local councillor with a reputation for standing up for local people and getting things done. In 2002, he was elected leader of the Lib Dem Group in Sheffield and in May 2008, became Leader of the Council. As Council Leader, Paul was quick to make his mark, known for injecting a bit of Yorkshire straight-talking into any situation. Under Paul’s leadership, Sheffield saw its lowest ever council tax rise two years in a row, and senior managers in Town Hall cut by 10%. He has also shown that he’s not afraid to get his hands dirty, joining gritting teams battling to keep roads, picking up litter in parks as part of Spring Clean events and going out with graffiti teams cleaning up local neighbourhoods. Paul is also a patron of Roundabout, a Sheffield-based charity for the homeless.
